Amit Mishra shares his thoughts on spin bowling
India has
produced a good number of quality spinners throughout the year but there are
very few wrist spinners available and Amit Mishra is one of them. He feels that
wrist spin is a difficult craft that can only be mastered with hours of honing
the skill sets and also a leader who backs the player in difficult moments of
the game.
“Any
leg-spinner needs a good captain because when the bowler is under attack, you
need that sort of a skipper, who would back you to the hilt and give you that
requisite confidence even when you have gone for a few runs,” Mishra told PTI
in an exclusive interview. “A captain who basically understands the psyche of a
leg-spinner.”
Amit
Mishra, who will be seen in action for Delhi Capitals this IPL season in India,
has played 68 games across formats for India and one of the successful bowlers
in IPL too. Meanwhile, in India barring Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and
Rahul Chahar, there aren’t many quality leg-break bowlers available too as
well.
“In the
past 5-6 years, we have had some good leg-spinners but we will get more quality
as we get more such bowlers, who have learnt the craft, and share the knowledge
of their art with next generation. The passing of knowledge is very important
more so for leg spin which an art form is,” said Mishra, who is the second
leading wicket-taker with 160 wickets from 150 IPL games after Lasith Malinga’s
170 wickets.
He also
opened up on the qualities that need in a good wrist spinner. He said that one
should know how to bowl according to situations and also variation is must as
well. He even added that the spinner not only has to be a good wicket-taking
bowler but needs to play the restrictive role as well if needed.
However, he
is gearing up to play in the IPL 2021, starting
from April 9.
