Dilip Vengsarkar wants R Ashwin back for limited-overs cricket

Although the Indian Cricket Team has plenty of options when it comes to players, the Indian spinners failed to live up to the expectations in the recently-concluded ODI series against England at home. In the second ODI against England, Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal Pandya ended up conceding 156 runs in 16 overs that cost India the game, as England chased down 337 with six wickets and 39 balls in hand as well.

After seeing this, former India chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar expressed his thoughts. While there are not many experienced players left in the team, and not too many around in the domestic circuit, he wants the experienced R Ashwin back in the limited-overs circuit, and further added that if he was the selector of the Indian cricket team right now, he would have done it as well.

“If I were the chief selector (now), I would have brought Ashwin back (to the white ball set-up). Why not? Because he is such an experienced bowler and he has variety. As they say, spinners mature late and he has done so well over the years. He is in terrific form in red-ball cricket. I think it will suit the team if he is brought back,” Vengsarkar told The Sunday Express.

R Ashwin had last featured in the limited-overs format in 2017. Despite giving decent performances, he was dropped, and youngsters were preferred ahead of him. Vengsarkar further said that youngster Washington Sundar is no match if anyone wants to compare him with Ashwin. He cited players of “the same discipline” have played in the Indian squad before the Ravindra Jadeja-Axar Patel combo and there wouldn’t be any harm playing Washington and Ashwin together.

Moreover, who doesn’t know how effective Ashwin was in the Test series against England? Not only with the ball but he scored with the bat too. And, his handy batting could be helpful for India lower down the order as well.

“In the ODIs, when the spinners bowl, their job is to get wickets in the middle overs. If they fail to get wickets, then the opposition can score a huge total, with wickets in hand. So basically, Ashwin’s job will be to get wickets and he is good at that. The variety he has, he would be a very good attacking option and very few can match his variety. As far as spinners are concerned, you don’t contain the batsmen (in this format), especially in the middle overs,” Vengsarkar concluded.
