One of our sweetest ODI wins: Virat Kohli on the 1st ODI win against England
India captain Virat
Kohli on Tuesday said that the win in the ODI series-opener against England as
one of their “sweetest in the recent past”. He also praised the opener Shikhar
Dhawan who smashed a blistering 98 runs as well.
While chasing 318, England had a flying
start at 135 for no loss in the 15th over before Indian
bowlers brought the team back in the game, where the debutant pacer Prasidh
Krishna claimed 4/54 — the best by an Indian on debut alongside Shardul Thakur’s
three scalps and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s two.
“This is one of our sweetest wins in the
recent past. This one is right up there with any other. Getting nine wickets so
quickly is outstanding. To come back into the game the way they did is
brilliant. I’m a really, really proud man right now,” said Kohli at the
post-match presentation following the 66-run win.
However, England was bundled out for 251
after that flying start. Meanwhile, KL Rahul, who was out of form during the
T20I series, has returned too.
“As I mentioned in the past as well, we
promote players who have intent. Special mention to Shikhar’s innings as well.
KL as well, back among the runs. We want to back the people who we know will go
out and do a selfless job. For every spot we have two-three players available.
Right now we are on the right path and have a big pool of players to choose
from. Shikhar’s body language was amazing when he wasn’t playing. He was so
helpful for us. Today he deserved the result,” said Kohli.
After having won the four-match Test
series 3-1 and five-match Twenty20 International series 3-2, India started
their three-match One Day International series with a stunning win. While they
need another win to clinch the series against England, the visitors need one
win to level the series as well. It will be interesting to see which team will
have the last laugh when the again take on each other on March 26 in Pune.
