Rishabh Pant happy to get the chance to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021
The 14th
edition of the Indian Premier
League is all set to begin on April 9 in India.
While every team is preparing in their respective camps, Delhi Capitals are no
different. However, Delhi got a massive blow as their captain Shreyas Iyer had
dislocated his shoulder during the 1st ODI against England and has been ruled
out of the entire IPL.
In his
absence, young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant will lead the team. While many
thinks he shouldn’t lead, Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting backed him,
citing that his recent successes against Australia and England will give him
the confidence to lead after he was named captain of Delhi Capitals in place of
the injured Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming IPL 2021 season.
“This is a
tremendous opportunity for the young Rishabh, who is coming off successful
stints against Australia and England which will no doubt give him the
confidence needed to take on a new role that comes with a lot more
responsibility. The coaching group is excited to work with him, and we can’t
wait for the season to get started,” said Ponting, the former Australia captain
and legendary batsman said.
Rishabh
Pant has been in a sublime form in the recent past, cemented his place as
India’s all-format wicketkeeper-batsman too. He played a crucial role in
helping India win the Test series in Australia as well as at home against
England. His 97 on the fifth day of the third Test in Sydney helped the
visitors draw the game and then his unbeaten 89 on the fifth and final day of the
fourth and final Test in Brisbane helped the team register a historic Test and
series win against Australia.
Against
England, he also scored 101 in the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad earlier
this month to give a good finish to India. He even rewarded with the addition
of the white-ball series. He made quickfire scores of 70-odd in the last two
ODIs too and helped his side win 2-1 in Pune too.
About his
new role, Rishabh Pant said, “Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL
journey began six years ago. To lead this team is a dream I’ve always
harboured. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I can’t wait to
give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals.”
