Pat Cummins to Miss Rest of the IPL in the UAE
As the Indian
Premier League 2021 is all set to resume in UAE in
September-October, it brought a few negatives with it as well. While England
players wouldn’t take part in it, Australia pacer Pat Cummins, who is the key
member of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise, would not play in the remaining
games in the UAE as well.
As per the Sydney Morning Herald,
Cummins has shared his decision, although he did not give any reason for this
so far.
“David Warner and Pat Cummins could be
rested from the West Indies tour because of family reasons – others could
follow after a draining year in several bubbles – and Cummins, despite a
multimillion-dollar IPL contract, has already said he will not return to the
T20 tournament this season,” shared the report.
As far as England players are concerned,
the decision has come after Ashley Giles, managing director of the England
men’s team, had earlier said that the ECB wouldn’t change their schedule for
the rest of the games of the 14th edition of the cash-rich league. The
remaining games of the IPL will likely take place between
September 15 and October 15 window as well.
“We are going to have to give some of
these guys a break at some point. But the intention of giving guys a break for,
say, Bangladesh, wouldn’t be for them to go and play cricket elsewhere,”
ESPNcricinfo quoted Giles as saying. “We have to manage our schedule now, so we
get our guys arriving in the best shape possible for the T20 World Cup and the
Ashes.”
On the other hand, the Board of Control
for Cricket in India (BCCI) has further stated that it needs more time from the
ICC to decide on hosting the T20 World Cup later this year in India considering
the current situation in the country owing to COVID-19 as well.
“The BCCI SGM further authorised the
office bearers to seek an extension of time from the ICC to take an appropriate
call on the hosting of ICC T20 World Cup 2021,” the BCCI added in an official
release.
