Slowness of Wicket Cost RCB the Game, Says Mike Hesson
Director of Cricket Operations of Royal
Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team, Mike Hesson, has shared his views after the
34-run loss to Punjab Kings (PBKS) where he said that it had more to do with
the slowness of the pitch than the lack of effort by the team.
After analysing the performance of his
team quite well, which has lost only two Indian Premier League (IPL) games so
far in the 2021 edition, Hesson said that the difficulty in playing the shots
in the second innings due to the slow track cost them the game.
“It was getting difficult to force the
ball. I think you could stand and force the ball once but when you were trying
to hit, it was getting very hard. We weren’t getting any timing on it. The
harder we tried to hit, the worse it got. We needed to get one into the stands
but it was very difficult,” said the former Head coach of the New Zealand
cricket team.
Mike Hesson also said that Chris Gayle
(46 off 24 balls) did damage the confidence of his bowlers when Punjab Kings
were batting. It was undoubtedly a stunning knock from the swashbuckling
batsman.
“He (Gayle) came in and put us under
pressure and we probably couldn’t respond as well as we could have. Then we
fought back really well (restricting PBKS to) 100 for 1 after 10 overs. But
over the next 6-7 overs, we just let it slip. They (PBKS) probably got 15-20
more runs than would have been ideal on this sort of a wicket. Had they been
restricted to 160, we would have approached the game slightly differently,” he
said.
However, while bowling, Punjab’s
Harpreet Brar sealed the deal by dismissing three main pillars of RCB – Virat
Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. With their dismissals, RCB lost the
hope of win as well.
Hesson also said that after every defeat
they review the match and this time, too, there will be one, but there’s
nothing much to do, as every player of the team has been doing well, and they
have a good start of the tournament too.
