Chris Woakes Says IPL Stars "Lucky" Amid COVID-19 in India

 


Payers who have been taking part in IPL are the "lucky" ones as they get to play the cash-rich Twenty20 tournament despite having a COVID-19 emergency ravages India, England all-rounder Chris Woakes said AFP recently.

However, four players have tested positive and a few, including England's Liam Livingstone, have left the IPL bio-bubble because of the coronavirus, which is affecting more than 300,000 people a day in the country. While games are taking place in empty stadiums away from the crisis, hospitals are running short of oxygen, beds and proper medicines as well.

Meanwhile, the Indian Premier League has been taking place across six cities and Woakes, who plays for the Delhi Capitals, said that he has been trying to stay positive in the bio-secure 'bubble' for the league.

"It's a shame with the situation at the moment with the people all around the world having to deal with Covid, which isn't ideal," the 32-year-old said in a recent interview.

"Within the bubble we are trying to stay positive. We are very lucky that we still get a chance to play cricket and entertain people on the outside," he further added.

On the other hand, players including Australia’s Daniel Sams (Royal Challengers Bangalore) has been tested positive before the tournament, whereas some have already withdrew because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

India has reported over 16 million cases and 187,000 deaths from the global pandemic novel coronavirus so far and it has become more dangerous too.

"Very different times we are all living in at the moment. It's a very different IPL, no fans, bio-secure bubble, so definitely has a different feel to it," said Woakes.

"To keep busy I have got two English teammates with me in Sam Billings and Tom Curran. We spend quite a lot of time together," he concluded.

Devdutt Padikkal happy to score a hundred in IPL

  After scoring his maiden IPL hundred, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s young batsman Devdutt Padikkal said that he was keen to contribute for his team's win after he missed the first game of the ongoing league due to COVID-19.
