VVS Laxman Remembers the ‘Unrest’ Situation in SRH Camp
Former India cricketer and the mentor of
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) VVS Laxman, has recently shared the incidents of the
camp when the news of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji
and CEO Kasi Viswanathan had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus came in the
news. Laxman said that the ‘apprehensions mounted’ once SRH camp received the
news.
“We had full confidence in the protocols
that had been put in place even when we moved from one city to another, but
once we learnt of the positive tests in the KKR and CSK camp, our apprehensions
mounted,” he wrote in his column in TOI. “We [SRH] had just finished a match
against CSK and several of us caught up with old friends, so there was
understandable anxiety and unrest until the test results were out.”
The veteran, who can be seen in the
dugout along with SRH players, has shared that he has no idea how their
wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha got infected by the deadly virus. He further
added that Wriddhi was about to play the match against Rajasthan Royals but he
felt ‘under the weather.’
“Wriddhi was slated to play Sunday’s
match against Rajasthan Royals but felt a little under the weather on Saturday
night. We immediately placed him in isolation and, despite our prayers, he
returned a positive test. We are still wondering how, despite taking all
precautions, Wriddhi got infected,” Laxman again shared.
However, the former batting great backed
the decision of postponing the cash-rich league as he believed that the health
and safety of players and others staff should be the first priority during this
tough situation.
“Unfortunate as it might appear, the
right decision was taken to suspend the IPL following the breach
of bio-secure bubbles of four franchises across two cities,” he expressed.
However, the 2021 edition of IPL got
postponed after several players got affected by Covid-19 despite being in the
bio-bubble in multiple cities like Ahmedabad and New Delhi as well. It started
with two Kolkata Knight Riders players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier
who have tested positive and then three support staff of CSK reported positive
following Amit Mishra and Wriddhiman Saha who eventually tested positives too
that led to the cancellation of the tournament for the time being with
immediate effect.
